Nivalis Nights Steam Deck: Playable, Not Yet Supported

Nivalis Nights runs on a Steam Deck — launch-day reviews report 30 FPS with no settings changes — but it is not supported. The store publishes no Steam Deck compatibility rating, and all three official statements 505 Games has made about handhelds were written on September 29, 2026. None of them promises a date for support.

The three official answers, side by side

The three get quoted as contradictions. They are not: they describe a state, an intention and a queue.

Official wording When Where
"As for Steam Deck, the game won't have full support at launch, but we're already working on improving the experience. We'll keep refining performance after release and widen the range of supported hardware over time." 2026-09-29 14:56 UTC Launch announcement
"We are exploring several handheld devices and platforms. As we've mentioned previously, we will share more news about this when we can." Last edited 2026-09-29 12:31 pm PDT Official FAQ, under "Will it work on SteamDeck?"
"Steam Deck: improving performance on Steam Deck." Posted 2026-09-29 7:55 am PDT Pinned "Read First / Known Issues" thread

All three fall on September 29, 2026. The two forum times are Steam's own rendered timestamps, read off the title attribute of the timestamp span on each thread. The announcement time is the one conversion here: the news feed returns a Unix date field (1790693797) and nothing else, so 14:56 is that value decoded to UTC. No gap between the three is quoted, because no source states one.

Official source: Nivalis Nights | How to / FAQs (2026) — posted by Camilla505 for 505 Games, also printed inside the store page description.

Row one is a claim about a ship date. Row two, published later the same day, swaps a yes/no question for an open exploration and defers to "when we can" — how a studio talks when a port depends on unscoped work. Row three matters most: the Deck is a listed to-do item, not a closed question.

What the Steam store actually publishes about the Deck

Re-pulled September 30, 2026. Three things are absent.

No rating is displayed. The page embeds a hardware-compatibility payload that, decoded, reads resolved_category: 0 with an empty resolved_items list for every class it covers — Steam Deck, SteamOS, Steam Machine, Steam Frame — and an empty steam_deck_blog_url. That payload is what Valve draws the Deck badge from, so no badge renders.

The app API has no Deck field. No steam_deck_compatibility key and no Deck-specific tag among the fourteen categories. It does list Full controller support, DualSense Controller Support, Steam Cloud and Camera Comfort; platforms has Windows true, Mac and Linux false.

The build underneath is a Windows build. The official bug-report steps are Windows-only, down to the dxdiag keypress and the log path %USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\ION LANDS\Nivalis Nights. The same post anticipates the Deck: "If you play on Steam Deck, just let us know, there's no need to send this."

Do not wait on the store page to tell you

Nothing there resolves a Deck rating, so there is no badge to interpret. Until it does, 505's wording is the only authority — and it says full support is not here yet while listing "improving performance on Steam Deck" as active work.

What Deck owners have actually measured

I sampled 600 reviews through the Steam review API, paginated six pages, on September 30, 2026. Ten English reviews name the Steam Deck outright and all ten left a positive verdict. The bad numbers sit inside the good ones.

Reported Upvotes Posted (UTC) In the reviewer's words
30 FPS, no adjustments 8 09-29 16:08 "performing a lot better than i expected it would on my steamdeck (30 fps) with no adjustments"
About 20 FPS, memory-bound 0 09-30 14:17 Settings changes had "zero affect on the frame rate, which hovered around 20fps."
28-34 FPS 0 09-30 03:12 "on the lowest setting at 800p I managed to squeeze 28-34 on the steam deck"
Playable, but a freeze lost a day 1 09-29 21:03 "the screen suddenly froze and I had to force close the game"

Only two frame rates appear in positive reviews: 30, and 28 to 34. Nobody has published a Deck 60. One review reports smooth play on a Lenovo Legion Go at all HIGH and flags its own advantage: "the Z1 Extreme Chip does a lot of heavy lifting compared to my OLED Deck." Its guess that Low settings should be smooth on the Deck is inference, not an official position.

Why 20 FPS and 30 FPS are both true

The 20 FPS report names the constraint, not the symptom:

I tried running it on my Steam Deck and it didn't run so well. However, the Steam Deck doesn't meet the minimum requirements. The game maxes out the RAM on the Steam Deck before it maxes out the CPU or GPU. It uses around 5.5GB for VRAM and the rest of the 16GB for the CPU.

The same reviewer, on a desktop, reports 15 GB of system RAM and 10.5 GB of VRAM at 4K and 60 FPS on maximum settings. The ceiling is memory, and a Deck's 16 GB is one pool shared between system RAM and VRAM. That is why two people on identical hardware report 30 and 20 FPS, and why lowering the preset changed nothing at all.

The official minimum agrees — 16 GB RAM, a 6 GB VRAM card, "1080p at 30 FPS with the very low Graphics Quality preset", full table in system requirements. A Deck meets 16 GB on paper, sits under the VRAM number by construction, and its 5.5 GB VRAM usage is nearly what a desktop needs for a frame buffer. There is no upscaling to claw back headroom, because the FAQ says the engine version used does not support it. Why NPC crowds bottleneck the game is in performance issues.

505's own reply template has no handheld line

The same sample has 21 distinct developer replies, none mentioning a handheld. The recurring template reads:

Hi - Regarding performance, frame rate can vary in areas with lots of NPCs. If you notice performance dropping, restarting the game should help, or try setting your PC's power mode to performance. It will help boost your CPU and FPS.

It says "your PC's power mode". On SteamOS the equivalent is the power limit in the performance overlay, and 505 has never published that mapping — so a Deck player filing a ticket gets advice written for a desktop, and the lever that matters most on a handheld is the one it never names.

If you are playing on a Deck right now

  1. Budget 30 FPS at launch settings. The only Deck numbers in circulation are 20, 28 to 34, and 30, none on a stable build.
  2. Set the power limit yourself. 505's low-FPS advice is a desktop power mode; the handheld equivalent is one slider in the overlay.
  3. Save more often than on PC. The game autosaves at the end of each in-game day and saves manually from the pause menu, and one Deck owner lost a full day to a freeze during fast travel. See saves and stuck problems.
  4. Report via the 505 support portal, say Deck, skip DxDiag, as the pinned post instructs.

The one real hardware commitment is control: Full controller support and DualSense Controller Support are both listed, and the FAQ confirms the game "will feature full controller support". That holds on a handheld. It is not a performance or port commitment, and the same tags sit on a Windows-only build — see the platform status table.

What has not been announced

  • A compatibility rating. The store payload resolves to category 0 for every device class.
  • A Deck graphics preset or button layout. Neither has been published.
  • A date. "We'll keep refining performance after release" and "when we can" are the entire schedule.
  • A named handheld list. "Several handheld devices and platforms" names none.
  • Patch notes. The official news feed still ends at the launch announcement; the pinned thread says "Patches to improve things further are already in the works", undated.

FAQ

Is Nivalis Nights playable on Steam Deck? Yes. Ten English reviews in a 600-review sample name the Deck explicitly, all positive, reporting about 20, 28 to 34, and 30 FPS. Playable as in it runs, not as in support.

What FPS do you get on Nivalis Nights on Steam Deck? Launch-day numbers are 30 FPS with no adjustments, 28 to 34 FPS at 800p on the lowest setting, and about 20 FPS where system memory ran out first. No reviewer has reported 60.

Is Nivalis Nights Steam Deck verified? No. The hardware-compatibility data resolves to category 0 with empty item lists for every Steam device class, and no badge renders.

Will Nivalis Nights get full Steam Deck support? The work is committed, the date is not. The pinned thread lists "Steam Deck: improving performance on Steam Deck" as active, and the announcement promises continued refinement and wider hardware support. No date exists.
