Nivalis Nights Boats: Refuelling, the Docks and Seafaring

The boat is the only vehicle you drive and the Docks are its home berth. Where fuel comes from, why players call it the worst economy, and what seafaring opens.

Nivalis Nights Boats: Refuelling, the Docks and Seafaring

The boat is the only thing in Nivalis Nights you drive yourself, and it lives at the Docks. Fuel is a real running cost that players single out as the worst part of the loop, and no official source has ever published where fuel comes from, what it costs or how full the tank starts. Seafaring, the boat-based quest line, is the only progression that uses it. Here is what is documented, what players found, and what nobody has written down.

What 505 says you can do with it

Four official texts describe the boat, and none of them is a manual.

Official source: Nivalis Nights | How to / FAQs - transport and open-world answers, last edited 29 September 2026; COMMUNITY Q&A - World & Exploration section.

The FAQ is blunt about scope. Asked whether you can drive a car, the answer is: "In Nivalis Nights, you can't drive a car directly, but you travel between districts using taxis that connect the entire city. You can steer a boat, though!" The same page, on open world, says "In Nivalis Nights, you can explore different areas of the city and the ocean on your boat" before tempering it — the city "isn't fully 'open world'" because other districts are background environments.

The March 2026 Q&A puts it the same way from the design side: "You'll move between districts using automated systems like HOVA taxis and trains. You won't be able to drive cars, but you will be able to pilot your own boat. This lets you explore more freely and reach areas that are, of course, connected to the waters surrounding the city."

The Steam store Features list is one bullet long: "Explore the city with your own boat and go fishing." The store description adds where you go when the day gets bad — "retreat to the docks to explore the city by boat".

The Docks are the berth, and the numbers back it up

The January 2025 community blog is the only text that ties the boat to a place in the world: "At the docks, you'll be able to set sail on your boat to search for the perfect catch for your sushi dishes, whether during the day or at night." The same post describes the boat as a place to live rather than a vehicle to park: "When exhaustion sets in, your boat will serve as a cozy refuge where you can rest and spend the night."

Steam's achievement list, read 4 October 2026, supports that. Rates move hourly.

Place % of players What the game says about it
Docks 56.3% "Visit the Docks."
Docks Postcard 0.9% "Collect a postcard of the Docks."
Oil Rig 21.6% "Visit Oil Rig."
Project Grapevine 1.9% "Spread seeds on the Oil Rig."

A boat that a majority of owners have parked at means the Docks is not a scenic stop — it is the hub, and Oil Rig at 21.6% is the far end of the same water route. Project Grapevine is the tell: seeding a location that is also a fishing destination means the boat route doubles as a quest route.

Salt Pete's ferry is not your boat

The May 2025 character spotlight introduces "a tall, blocky robot with a straw hat and two large glass eyes" who "runs a makeshift ferry - little more than some riveted sheet metal" at the docks. Salt Pete claims it is "the safest, cheapest way to cross the bay". That is an NPC service crossing the bay, not the vessel you pilot. Guides that send you to him for the boat have misread the blog.

The fuel problem, in players' own words

No official source has ever printed a fuel price, a tank size, a refill percentage or a refuelling action. What exists is a large volume of player testimony that fuel is expensive enough to make the whole fishing economy unprofitable. Snapshot 4 October 2026 from 999 unique English Steam reviews pulled via cursor pagination.

"trying to engage with finding the fishing spots is ruinously expensive - it costs many more times what you make from fishing to buy your boat's fuel. The balancing is also rather miserable." — 506 upvotes, 1,097 hours played

That is the single most-upvoted review in the sample, and the fuel sentence is one of the reasons it is that long. Three others say the same thing in different words:

  • "selling it ends up breaking even with the cost of fuel to take your boat out" — 2 upvotes, 485 hours
  • "Don't count on fishing for money - it costs way more to fuel your boat than you'll make selling 100 fish." — 3 upvotes, 679 hours
  • "Fuel system for the boat is not well thought out" — listed among requested fixes, 672 hours

And this one, which is the closest anyone has come to describing the mechanic: "I am at like 1/2 fuel for my boat. Maybe lets get some gas....nope there is no pump next to the berth you start at, and no indication where I should go to talk to someone about it." — 6 upvotes, 375 hours. The same player suggests the fix should be a quest: "leave the ship only 1/2 full when you get it initially and give a quest aspect to refuel it".

Nobody can hand you a refuelling guide because no refuelling guide exists

Not one official source names a fuel vendor, a pump, an NPC, a price or a gauge. Every "how to refuel the boat in Nivalis Nights" walkthrough currently online is a guess dressed as a step list. The number is real enough that players feel it every session; the procedure behind it is undocumented.

What the first two patches changed about the boat

Update #1 shipped 1 October 2026, one day after a 506-upvote review went live, and it touched the boat directly: "Improved the boat for better visibility from the cockpit and less cause for nausea." Update #2, the next day, added the light budget slider described in our performance guide and tightened staff behaviour.

The nausea fix is the detail worth keeping. It tells you the boat is a cockpit you sit inside, not a third-person vessel you watch from above — which matters when you are reading a radar for treasure spots instead of watching scenery.

Seafaring, the quest line, and the one achievement with no description

Seafarer sits at 48.4% of players — the 8th most common achievement in the game — and Valve publishes no description at all for it. It is the only water-themed achievement that is neither a Visit nor a catch, which makes it the best public proxy for how far players get on the water.

The early quest is literally named Seafaring, and it is a two-step chain: locate the first treasure near the Oil Rig, then fish it up. Because the second step is reported broken for some players, the full walkthrough lives on our treasure guide. The important structural fact is that the quest marker only exists in daylight — players who tried it at night found nothing there at all, and the marker is gone again after curfew.

Progression through the boat is officially promised but never quantified. The March 2026 Q&A says "Fishing itself expands over time as well, letting you discover new spots and species with your boat." No source says how many spots exist, what boat level unlocks, or whether the boat itself upgrades.

The two shipping fixes for a berth never leave the dock on their own. One player reports "While driving the boat, you can clip completely into waves, filling the cabin with water, breaking immersion", and that lanterns and lights "clip into the side of the buildings and boat" — 6 upvotes, 208 hours.

What has never been published

  • Where fuel is bought, by whom, or for how many Lims
  • What the tank capacity is, or whether the boat starts partly full
  • Whether fuel is consumed by distance, by time, or by casting
  • Whether the boat can be damaged, lost, or repaired
  • How many fishing or treasure spots the boat route opens
  • Whether the Oil Rig is reachable by boat in a straight line, or only by following a channel

For income, the FAQ is the only official statement that matters: fishing "is also a good way to earn extra money by selling it on the market." Our business and money guide covers the debt clock that fuel competes with, and the fishing guide covers the 24 officially named catches.

Treat the boat as a paid taxi, not a fishing platform

Given the fuel economics above, the cheapest use of a boat trip is the one that pays for itself: a treasure spot, a quest marker near the Oil Rig, or a fast-moving quest objective. Fishing from a berth you can reach on foot, and the map and districts guide covers the 19 places worth walking to instead.

FAQ

Where do you refuel the boat in Nivalis Nights? Nowhere official. No 505 source, patch note or FAQ answer names a fuel pump, vendor or NPC. Players report that the berth you start at has no pump next to it, and that nothing in the UI points to one. Treat every refuelling instruction online as unverified.

How do you get the boat? The store Features list says you have "your own boat", and the January 2025 blog puts the sailing point at the docks. The FAQ confirms you can steer it. No source describes the moment you receive it, whether it is bought, or whether it is scripted.

Where do the Oil Rig and open water fit in? Oil Rig is an official Visit achievement at 21.6%, and one achievement asks you to spread seeds there. Players describe sailing out past the rig structures at night in fog. Whether it sits inside a normal sailing route or needs a trigger is undocumented.

Is the boat a fast travel option? Officially no — the FAQ and Q&A both list taxis, trains and the subway as the transit spine, and the boat separately as the water route. Loading screens exist between districts regardless.

Does photo mode work from the boat? The camera behaviour that freezes the city works anywhere, but no source discusses boat framing specifically. See the photo mode guide.
