Nivalis Nights Dead Rat: How to Drop It and Fix the Bug

The rat is not an inventory item you drop. It is a marker inside a specific restaurant, and the rat traps only show up during curfew.

Nivalis Nights Dead Rat: How to Drop It and Fix the Bug

The dead rat is not a thing you carry and drop. Players hit this in the first hour, assume it is a broken quest, and are usually wrong twice: once because the rat is a marker inside a restaurant, and once because the other half of the chain is curfew-locked. Here is what the rat quests actually are, in the order you hit them.

Two different rat quests, not one

Search results collapse these into a single problem. In the game there are at least two, and they behave completely differently.

Rat Whisperer chain The rat delivery
Who gives it Gladstone, a rat whisperer you meet in Meridian Market after curfew The food critic
What you do Remove rat traps Deliver or dispose of a rat
Where markers appear Only during curfew On the quest's own marker
Official record Achievement Rat Whisperer, 0.3% None

The Steam achievement is the only official text on either: Rat Whisperer — "Help rat whisperer Gladstone on a secret mission during curfew." — held by 0.3% of owners, read 4 October 2026 on Steam's official achievement page.

What the rat actually is

The clearest player description of the delivery step, from the Steam thread Planting a dead rat? (3 October 2026):

"The rat is not something you can 'equip' to your hands and then drop, so what am I missing?"

The answer, in the same thread:

"There is a quest marker and location attached to the quest. Check your map and journal. There is also a marker you have to interact with in the specific restaurant you have to goto."

So the rat never enters your hands. Accepting the quest places a marker; travelling to that restaurant and interacting with the marker completes it. The item itself is decoration.

Read the journal entry before you walk anywhere

Both answers in that thread say the same thing: the quest text carries the location. The player who solved it added that the journal "also on the left side often mentions location. Not always and for all quests. Some you have to dig deeper into its quest history or maybe even npc dialog." It is inconsistent, but it is the only place the destination is written down.

The rat traps: why only one marker ever shows

This is the half that makes the quest look broken. From the thread The Rat trap quest? Bugged or what? (30 September 2026):

"After curfew in meridian market, i spoke to some weird rat whisperer dude.. who wants an audience with the rat king, he told me to remove rat traps. I found one close by with a quest marker, then ive never found any more ... bugged quest?"

The resolution, from a second player in the same thread:

"there are 1-2 rat traps per district, for a total of 10 traps. You just have to move around each neighbourhood to dismantle the traps. It takes several days, but is totally doable."

And the rule that explains everything: "yup quest markers only appear during curfew."

Ten traps, spread one or two per district, revealed only between curfew and dawn, spread across several in-game days. That is not a bug, it is a multi-day side errand dressed as a single objective — and the reason a player who tries it on one night finds exactly one trap and concludes the quest is dead.

The official bug list does not cover either rat quest

505's pinned known-issues thread carries one quest line: "Quests: fixing minor dialogue issues in a small number of quests." Dialogue, nothing else. If you are genuinely stuck rather than misunderstanding the trigger, this is not a listed issue — our stuck-problem guide covers what to do when a quest has no fix coming.

Step by step

Everything below is assembled from the two threads above, dated 30 September and 3 October 2026. It is community-reported and may change in a patch. Nothing here is published by the developer.

  1. Wait for curfew. After dark, go to Meridian Market and find the rat whisperer Gladstone. The achievement description confirms this is the trigger condition.
  2. Accept the mission. He wants the rat traps removed for an audience with the rat king.
  3. Go out during curfew only. Markers do not exist in daylight. If you go looking at noon and find nothing, nothing is wrong.
  4. Walk the neighbourhood, do not run one route. One or two traps per district, ten in total. The player who solved it had tried a single district on their last curfew and forgot to check the others.
  5. Dismantle each trap you find. Repeat on subsequent nights until the chain closes.
  6. For the food critic's rat: open the journal. Accepting that quest attaches a location. Go to the named restaurant and interact with the marker there. Do not try to equip or drop the rat.
These quests run through your curfew window

Both the achievement description and the player confirmation put them after dark, which means they compete with the same limited-hours block as everything else. Our curfew and day-night guide covers how the clock works and what the After Curfew achievement at 16.7% actually measures.

Why so many players report it as broken

The complaint is genuine and appears in reviews, not just forum threads. From a Steam review:

"I spent a solid 15 minutes looking for noodles. Now I have a quest to drop a rat, but I can't take it out of my inventory. There is no explenation on how fishing works, so on and so forth." — 8 upvotes, 275 hours played

Three design gaps stack up here. The game never tells you that markers are curfew-only. The rat is not a normal inventory object, so every generic drop interaction fails. And the quest HUD, which our quests and commissions guide covers in full, cannot be closed and does not say where to go.

The player in the Planting a dead rat? thread put the broader frustration well: after 20 hours they "still feel like I'm bumbling my way through this game, but for some reason this tripped me up the most", partly because there are no area maps and markers sometimes point at a moving person or another floor.

If it is genuinely wedged

If you accepted the food critic quest and no location appears in the journal, the honest answer is that no player has documented a fix. What does exist:

  • Reload the save. Not confirmed for this quest, but it is the first thing anyone tries and costs nothing.
  • Check whether you are conflating the two rat quests. Gladstone's is trap removal; the critic's is delivery. They share a keyword and nothing else.
  • Save before and after. Our saves guide explains the autosave-at-end-of-day behaviour that makes this more recoverable than it looks.
  • Report it through the official bug form. Update #2 fixed several quest-adjacent issues within 48 hours of launch, so the channel works.

FAQ

How do you drop the dead rat in Nivalis Nights? You do not drop it. The quest attaches a marker to a specific restaurant; interacting with the marker inside completes the step. The rat never becomes an equipable inventory object.

Where is the rat quest giver? Gladstone, a rat whisperer met in Meridian Market after curfew. A second rat quest comes from the food critic and is unrelated apart from the word rat.

How many rat traps are there? Ten in total, one or two per district, per a player who completed the chain on 30 September 2026. This is a community count, not an official one.

Why can I only see one rat trap? Because quest markers for that quest only appear during curfew. Go out after dark, and check a different district each night.

Is this bug fixed? Not officially. The developer's known-issues list covers quest dialogue only, and no patch note through 2 October 2026 mentions rat quests.

Method: achievement descriptions and rates read 4 October 2026 from Steam's official achievement page; player steps assembled from Steam discussion threads The Rat trap quest? Bugged or what? (30 September 2026) and Planting a dead rat? (3 October 2026); review quote from a 999-review English sample pulled the same day.
